This week marks what would turn out to be one of the most culturally impactful arrests of the 20th century. On Aug. 5, 1962, Nelson Mandela and an ally were arrested near the town of Howick, South Africa. Though the charges may have been dubious in nature, the damage was done. What would follow would be the 27-year prison sentence which led to Mandela being heralded as the “Father of the Nation” of South Africa.

If Nelson Mandela has only taught us one thing, it is the importance of standing for what you believe in, regardless of the suffering one may incur. Let’s take a moment to look back at this saga and perhaps learn something about the man behind the legend.
